VISIONS OF FUTURE, VISIONE OF THEATRE...

Visions of future, visions of theatre...
International festival of theatre and culture for the early years
5ª edition: 28th February – 8th March 2009

La Baracca - Teatro Testoni Bologna

Born in 2004, “Visions of future, visions of theatre... international festival of
theatre and culture for the early years”
is having its fifth birthday. Five years is a very important age: it is an age of revolution and consolidation, discoveries and opening to the world. At the age of five, children learn how to cycle on two wheels, they lose their baby teeth, learn to cooperate with the others leaving aside the focus on themselves they had until a few months before, and discover that “letting the others take part in the game" is much more fun.

“Visions of future, visions of theatre...” is a theatre festival for the early years.
When choosing the shows, we do it thinking of them: their needs, their enjoyment and their knowledge. This is why we present shows for a limited audience, because they are conceived and created for this particular type of audience by many Italian and European companies.
Theatre for the early years, and especially theatre for the youngest of children, requires that we learn, in time, how to "let children take part in the game", in order to share with them theatrical space and time. To this aim, Small size - the European Network for the Diffusion of Performative Arts for the Early Years - has created the Small size seeding fund. The fund supports the development of new theatrical productions for children from 0 to 4 years of age. Four productions developed thanks to this project will be presented in the context of the Zero-six Showcase.
The festival will feature 52 shows by 10 Italian companies and 9 European companies. 10 will be shows for children from 0 to 3 years, whereas 14 will be for children from 3 to 6. 32 shows will be presented to nursery and kindergarten children coming with their teachers, and 20 will be for children coming with their families and for theatre professionals.
As in the previous editions, they are all new productions, re-stagings, shows never
presented at other festivals or that have been rarely performed.
To discover what there is before a finished show, Studies is back this year as an
occasion for artists to present fragments, ideas, projects for possible shows that may never really take shape. Along with them, in 2009 we will introduce Premières: not only ideas, but evolving shows, different stages of works in progress.
At “Visions” we like to present foreign theatrical realities, to create possibilities of
exchange and sharing of experiences. This year, the section Postcards is dedicated to Denmark: a window on Danish theatre for children and its artistic, cultural and educational experiences. The showcase will feature 3 shows by 3 different companies.
The cycle of conferences International Experiences on the theme "Art and culture in the education for the early years” will focus on these aspects, providing useful and interesting information on Denmark, Cameroun, Austria and Israel (from Monday, March 2nd to Friday, March 6th).
Information is just as useful as common reflection. This will be the aim of the Forum
“Theatre for the very young”. It is organised in collaboration with Assitej International and it will take place on March 5th. During the past few years, theatre for the early years has been developing in many countries. The Forum - which will involve artists and researchers from all over the world - is an important opportunity to take stock of a rapidly-growing phenomenon and its future challenges, and to give a more pragmatic slant to "Visions” in the framework of an Assitej International Festival.

Two other occasions of reflection will be the conferences "Round-Trip Journeys” – journeys through music, art and philosophy... to rediscover childhood and approach it as if it was the first time, held on Saturday, February 28th, and “Poetry and Early Years” – A poetic research on - with - of words, held on March 7th.

“Visions” is a “Small size" Festival. During the three-year project (supported by the
European Programme Culture 2000), a lot of work has been done. In this context, the "Meeting with Small size" held on Friday, March 6th, we will try to reflect upon the past, present and future of the network and to present pieces of research and reflections.

Another Small size initiative is the Small size Workshop for Young European Artists. Four days (from Tuesday, March 3rd to Friday, March 6th) of theoretical and practical work on theatre and early childhood, an opportunity to continue pursuing two major objectives of the network: to focus on the training of young artists and to facilitate their approach to the early years. The workshop will also allow to continue the activities of Artists at the crèche, when the young artists will enter the crèches and kindergartens of Bologna, inquiring, proposing, interacting with children and educators and presenting short performances.

The training activities for Italian teachers and educators will be centred on the
Workshops, practical meetings with artists, experts in the different artistic disciplines. During the two weekends of the Festival, twenty workshops of three hours each will take place, whereas an intensive three-day workshop focused on the relationship with objects will take place from Monday, March 2nd to Wednesday, March 4th.
As far as foreign educators and teachers are concerned, from Tuesday, March 3rd to Friday, March 6th they will have the opportunity to attend A possible theatre –
Theatre for children from 0 to 3
, a theoretical and practical workshop for those who are interested in how theatre for children has evolved in Bologna during the past twenty years. In particular, the project Theatrical Scribbles will be presented, the innovative path of theatrical workshops for children under three, created and developed by thenursery educators of Bologna together with the artists of La Baracca – Testoni Ragazzi.
Finally, with the role of “bridge” between art and education, Lo Sguardo Altrove, the festival observatory will be developing its activities.
